I was part of a drug trial nearly ten years ago now. It was a different experience, one that I don’t think I will forget
through my history with Crohn’s. If you’ve been in a drug trial before, you would know the routine. You take either
a placebo or the real drug for a certain amount of time (you won’t know what you’re taking), & at some point you may
end up switching, still without any knowledge of if you’re taking the real thing or not.

I felt good for a time then. I thought the drug was working & it was going to be my salvation.

Amusingly enough, one of our previous comics was during this trial.

After a few months, I ended up stopping the trial and moving onto something else, quickly leaving it behind while moving onto new
ideas. Ultimately moving on to Remicade & then Humira, but that is another story.

A couple years later the phone rang.

‘Is this Brad?’ ,spoke a professional voice on the other end of the phone.

‘Yes, this is.’ I answered back. I was then told that there had been some deaths related to the trial I was in and they were checking in on me to make sure I was.
Well I guess to put it bluntly, living.

Hah, yup. That happened.

IMG_0766CAP in the Media!

C.A.P (Crohn’s Awareness Project) has been featured in the media for the first time! This is huge and something I really hadn’t expected.

Our issues of Crohn’s Advocate came in, but that would be a little bit of an understatement. We got two bundles worth!

Thanks again to Crohn’s Advocate Magazine for featuring Dylan Moore & I. We are both extremely humbled and honored by the occasion.

Check them out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CrohnsAndMe?fref=ts

Their main website: http://www.crohnsandme.com/Default-noflash.aspx
& the magazine’s link.

*There are usually free downloads allowed of the magazine with a registration, but they’re having technical issues and will get back to me when it’s back up & running.

Last note. We’re planning on having a mini contest where we will be mailing signed copies of our little magazine appearance with one other special googie that we’ve yet to think up yet

So as always, stay tuned and spread the word!

Drug Samples

Morning time rolls around. The most common time for taking meds.
I look into my pill bottle and notice it nearing the end. Looks like another
trip to the doctors for some free samples is in order.

One of the medications I take isn’t covered by my medical because of it
being super high strength and fairly new (in drug terms), so my doctor
gives me the hook up every few months to make sure my body is kept
in running order.

I always laugh to myself when leaving the office, my box or large bag in hand;
full of sample medications to last me for the next several months. I must
look partially crazy, like I’m preparing for an apocalypse or something.

There are times when friends & (or) family come to me after a bout with a
stomach flu or food poisoning, telling me how they understand a little
bit more with what we as IBD sufferers go through.

I feel horrible that they have to go through these things, but at the same
time, it’s nice to hear people understanding more of my everyday
life.

Recently my gal suffered some terrible stomach issues; this comic was her
idea based on those events.

Have you had this happen?

I’ve gained some weight as of late, and am doing my best to keep it on.

This has to happenings such
as the comic above. I used to get a bit annoyed by it; now I just know it means I’m doing better & my friends
are now noticing it as well.

Big Budget

We’ve all been there. I’m sure we’ve all felt the same. It’s a huge invasion of our personal space, but
image it from the doctors perspective. Imagine if hollywood were to make a blockbuster, ‘The Colonscopy’,
featuring….

What names do you think it would feature? Tell us in the comments.

“Russian Wisdom”- March 05th 2013

I seriously can’t believe that it took me this long to bring this to
comic form. This is one of the funniest things to happen to me
regarding my Crohn’s. That day, a classic Russian Stereo-type was
proven.

This was a few years back now, when I was really sick and could barely
stand up- let alone, walk around a grocery store. I looked like a
ninety-year old man, or the hunchback of Notre Dame. Take your pick.

We were stopped in the middle of the store when my girlfriends attention was
caught by an older, Russian, sample lady, ”psst… PSST..” the woman whispered.

My gal turned towards the old woman, “What is wrong with him?” she
inquired, looking over toward my direction- where I was clutching
the side of the isle, trying to stay vertical.

”He is really sick, he has crohn’s disease,” my girlfriend responded.

“Give him a shot of vodka when you get home,” the woman exclaimed- to which my girlfriend
nodded her head politely. The woman proceeded to nod along when she added, “No, it’s true.
We drink it for everything in Russia; it cures all ailments.”

‘A Matter of Ply’ – February 22nd 2013

“A Matter of Ply”
February 22nd 2013

Let’s set the scene. You rush into your place, doing the dance we’ve come to know as the washroom
boogie. Well
for me, it’s more like the washroom dash- get to the room as fast as possible…
HOLD THE LINE!

You get my point. We’ve either been there, or we’ve feared the moment enough to think about a
backup
plan. I have backup plans for everything, this could be due to my extreme expertise at
messing things up
or I just like to be covered.

A situation arose a few months back where I was down to the last few sheets of my toilet paper
and had no way to get more in time, so I went a couple of doors down and asked to borrow a roll
from a friend. He was kind enough to oblige but when I got back to my apartment, I noticed it was
1-ply…

1-ply…. I don’t even like using 2-ply… What am I going to do?!

Is it stupid to stress over things like this? Who knows, but I did indeed stress over it. Keys in hand,
I rush
to the store to grab some proper toilet paper, making sure to grab an extra package for
my neighbour.
The next day I hand him a few extra rolls of 3-ply, asking him to keep them on hand just in case.

I like back up plans.

“To Go or Not to Go”
February 04th 2013
© Outhouse Cartoons/C.A.P 2013

This is something that most of us can understand. You go out to do something, whatever
that may be. Shortly after leaving, a feeling starts in the gut, reminding me (us) about
the evils of leaving home with out a porta potty in tow. I have my gear with me,
a model to the front of me, and I work away. That feeling inside, gnawing at me.

This was one of the biggest reasons I started a home studio,  cutting back the amount of
on location shooting I did; In hopes it would help me deal with my washroom situations
a little better, and it did! But I still have moments like the one above, where I’m out and
about when the urge to go the washroom hits, like a bookie coming for his money.

I used to take pills to try and stop my bowel movements, luckily I stopped that a
few years ago, as it is a bad habit to get into. I try to work around my issues now, rather
than make them work around me.
