Cat-Cow (Bidalasana)

How This Helps IBD:

Cow creates space for the internal organs and relieves pressure; cat massages and squeezes the internal organs, promoting healthy digestion.   You are also releasing tension in the spine which can hinder proper digestion.  This is an “all-in-one!”

Cautions

  • Knee problems
  • Chronic or recent back pain, injury or surgery
  • Chronic or recent wrist pain or injury
  • Chronic or recent neck pain or injury

How to do:

Wrists are directly under the shoulders and shoulder-width apart. Knees are directly under the hips; knees and feet pelvis-width apart.

Toes are tucked under.  If you need to, start with your feet flat out.

The first position is “A” (cow) and is done slowly on the inhalation, arching the spine and lifting the chest and head up.

Next, slowly move to position “B” (cat) on the exhalation, rounding the spine and tucking the chin and tailbone in.  Do this about 5-10 times each way.
